Ready for Fall, Sunbeam Edibles and all!
The story with Sunbeam Edibles and Designing the District is long, colorful, humorous, and ironic.
As many of you know, we at Designing the District have invested much of our professional experience, creative experience, and interests in Canna-business. As you witnessed by the 2019 opening of our gorgeous high-end and luxurious medical marijuana dispensary in Northeast Washington DC: Cannabliss. My dear friend Sunbeam Sister (Lolly Amons) and I finally kicked off a creative collaboration to bring the medicinal and magical benefits of cannabis to all of you during the 2020 pandemic. The funny part is, we’ve been friends for well over 10 years, and it basically took us that long to make our friendship IRL official. Do you want to know that story? Ask us, it’s quite the roller coaster of silliness, cameras, celebrity, late nights, Fabulocity, and all that’s in between!
The beginning of our creative collaboration actually began around this time last year. Autumn, the holidays, a time to reconnect with old friends, re-kindle relationships, and celebrate coziness for a variety of reasons. The twist in this “Sunbeam Edibles meets Designing the District” collaborative plot is that we were simply reconnecting as friends since it had been such a long time for us to celebrate our relationship (no business initiative). We decided that getting together for a little baking session (a shared interest between both of us) would be the best approach. Ironically, it was right before Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday, a time that I normally bake goodies for friends and family. Last year‘s Thanksgiving was no different, except for the fact that my brother and sister completely miscalculated the calendar year, scheduled Thanksgiving at their in-laws (or away from our parents’ house, which is normally the spot) and I was going to miss the one lingering element of my childhood; the Thanksgiving tradition at my parents’. I only ever once missed Thanksgiving when I lived in France (20 years ago), and this would make the second time in my entire life. I was not thrilled about this, but I was cool with rolling with the punches.
When Lolly and I got together to bake, my family had already proposed an alternate Thanksgiving plan: Let’s do Thanksgiving at the country club! The food will be prepared for us, we can all do it together, we don’t have space restrictions, and it’ll be great! This was not part of my plan, I am a Thanksgiving traditionalist (for whatever that means) and I was just not having it. To solve the problem, I figured I’d loosen up, I go to Turkey Day a little stony baloney for a good giggle. I also figured I may bake a “High Pie“ for my family ... because what little harm will that do ... to get a little stony baloney out of everyone else?! So, on the day of Thanksgiving after connecting with my dear friend Lolly, baking all night long, and rekindling some great memories, I was stoked to bring a very special pie to my parents’ house during the day, before our dinner at the club. My normal Thanksgiving day tradition is to go to the Starbucks in Potomac Village (where I grew up) to meet my best friends from high school. I brought the special pie to my folks’ house and suggested to my father that he have a little piece before dinner at the club. For context, my father also enjoys canna treats and it’s something that we’ve connected on during my years living in California (2012-2016). I also tend to keep it on the DL since even though my mother fully (kinda) approves, she always gives us a little hell about it. So I went to the Starbucks in the village and subsequently returned to my parents’ home and noticed a chunk of the pie was taken out, so I assumed it was my father who had taken a nibble. Now transpires the very humorous part of the story. It turns out my mother who never uses cannabis, ate the pie and had no idea why she was feeling so silly like the world was spinning oppositely. (OY VEY – I thought to myself) and was face with the decision whether or not to tell her that the pie actually was one of Sunbeam Edibles custom-made High Pies!
Needless to say, that Thanksgiving at the country club was my most favorite and most memorable Thanksgiving I have ever experienced. Being a little stony baloney with my family, while my amazing mother was off her rocker with unstoppable giggles, made my 2019!
Lolly and I continued to grow our relationship baking together and of course, as the natural branding guy and agency that we are at Designing the District, we worked towards having a potential creative synergy. This year (2020) during the first quarantine shut down, was when Sunbeam Edibles and Designing the District launched our first collaboration on April 20th (4-20)! We were very excited to test out the cannabis waters with our very unique DC-based audience, thrilled to see the positive response from all of you that we are in Cannabusiness and we are offering a lifestyle alternative to surthriving Ms. Rona.
This month, we are excited to launch our Halloween trick-or-treat goodie bags for adults, the flavors are autumn themed, the packaging is spooktacular, and we are so excited to bring you an even better product now seven months after we started working together!
We invite you to place your first Sunbeam Edibles order with us, $10 off your first and $10 for every newbie you refer, and of course will throw in a little special something something for this special holiday.
